The First Descendant Review: Great For “Free To Play” Title, But Still Needs A Few Improvements

Published on:

The First Descendant should probably be on your free-to-play game list. The game seems like a mixture of Destiny 2 and Warhammer due to its building and upgrade mechanisms.

The MMORPG has plenty to offer, from numerous types of missions to unique characters called the Descendant.

You can own 19 descendants, all of whom share exclusive kits and abilities. At the start, you get to choose to pick one descendant from three free characters.

If you plan to get all the characters, you have two options: buy them from the store or collect four character parts. The character parts include a unique code, stabilizer, enhanced cell, and Spiral catalyst.

Unfortunatley, getting hands on the parts is not easy for every character except a few.

You have an extremely low drop rate for the codes, whereas, for the other parts, you should craft the “crafting material” using a few of the items, which can be Kuiper shards, Monad Shards, etc.

Thankfully, Nexon games have added a hover feature to show locations and missions to get those items, so you won’t have to spend hours searching for that crafting material in other areas.

Four Items To Obtain Any Characters

The easiest character to obtain, including the free ones, should be Bunny, as you can get almost every item just by playing the mission; you don’t have to spend time on getting the descendant part.

Unfortunatley, for others, it seems like a compulsion unless you buy them directly from the store.

If you somehow collect the four descendant parts, you should take them over to Magister Anais.

As if collecting the parts wasn’t enough, you should again invest a few minutes and hours to get your descendant ready. On top of that, you should invest a few hundred thousand gold as well.

Anais seems like a Jack of All Trades, as she doesn’t just help to obtain descendants or craft their parts; she always helps to obtain weapon parts and build new weapons.

Ultimate Weapons Choice

In The First Descendant, you can get 30 ultimate weapons, divided into different categories, including AR, Sniper Rifle, Shotgun, SMG, and Launchers.

Like Bunny, the easiest weapon to land in the early game should be the Thunder Cage, a decent SMG weapon when upgraded to max level.

Moreover, the process of getting the weapons is pretty similar to that of Descendant. For Descendants, you had to obtain the code, stabilizer, enhanced cell, and Spiral catalyst.

You must collect Polymer Syntium, Synthetic Fiber, Nano Tube, and Blueprint for the weapons. You also have the feature to craft the weapon parts if you visit Anais.

Players can get the weapon parts by crafting, playing missions, or just exploring the different locations of Echo Swamp and Vespers of Sterile Land.

If you wish to upgrade the weapons to the maximum level, you have to head to the Workbench in Albion; however, you should use one of your highest-level weapons.

Upgrading the weapon will enhance RPM, range, damage, and other features, but you can only get to the 30 Mark.

Offers Regular Updates With New Content

One of the best aspects of The First Descendant is its regular updates, which introduce new content and enemies.

Surprisingly, Nexon games even encourage players to search for farming spots for faster player upgrades.

With upgrades, you get new farming spots for EXP, Monad Shards, Golds, or other items as well.

The mixture of Destiny 2 and Warframe seems pretty complicated at times, especially if you are just an explorer of RPGs and play FPS games more.

But, with more game investment, you can slowly adapt to the modules, slots, and the drop rate chance to fill in the slot for the Descendants.

Descendants modules in the game.

A few times, I felt as if the Korean Developer had falsely claimed the drop rate as I completed the quest and explored the area for Descendant code over four hours, but I didn’t get my hands on any.

This can be a frustrating experience when you are trying to unlock the specific Descendant to use new abilities.

Adding to that, the action RPG shooter with module mechanics can be complicated if you haven’t played Destiny 2, Warframe, or StellarBlade.

If you are missing that one slot to obtain any characters, you will spend loads of currency if you try getting them somehow.

Nearly Impossible Missions With Worthy Rewards

Starting the looter-shooter should be relatively more accessible, as the missions are straightforward, but with progression, you can get confused due to the socket system and modules.

While learning the game mechanism may take some time, you will instantly fall in love with the shooting and movements.

The game is also extremely fun to play, and the settings are fine for a ” Free To Play” title.

If you jump into quests or opt for exploration, you will get rewarded with tons of currencies and items, great for fast progression.

Unlike other games, most missions can be completed in under ten minutes, even less if you have an experienced squad.

If you are starting the Encrypted Vault Mission, the Zone Recon quest, or playing descendant quests, it won’t take long.

Another unique aspect of Nexon’s latest game is the Cutscenes, which are like any movie in terms of cinematography, dialogue, or graphics.

As much as I like Nexon’s idea of Descendants, their stories seem way too basic from the start and only revolve around Vulgus.

Nontheless, the character design is on point, and the cutscenes seem catchy if you ignore the dialogue options, if you switch to English, at least.

While the gameplay is similar to any other looter-shooter: You jump into missions, head to another waypoint, defeat a few enemies, and complete the objective, The First Descendant allows you to play on private servers.

For instance, completing the Recon Zone missions is almost impossible with randoms as they often tend to destroy the tanks and towers.

Nontheless, randomness does add a layer of fun, especially when you are not chasing that specific pattern or wanting to complete the objective.

Modes And New Seasons

If you have experience in other action RPG shooters, The First Descendant will be relatively easy for you, at least until the base game.

If you complete the base game, a hard mode will unlock, which will be difficult only if you reset your character; otherwise, you will have all the important characters or builds to destroy the swarm of enemies in any mission.

Similar to Destiny 2, you will have two standard weapons and a power weapon, but the fight approach depends on the character you have: attack or defense.

The First Descendant is also not shy of any updates, whether weekly or major ones. The looter shooter has recently launched its first ever season, “season 1 invasion” with numerous missions quarantine and chapel invasion.

While the missions can usually be played in the squad, you can only play solo during the quarantine. Moreover, to progress through the mission, you should beat the main storyline of The First Descendant, which can be unfair for many.

However, if you have a decent build, focusing, or wither shield or explosive damage, you won’t have any issues progressing. But it can get a lot trickier considering the new invasion mission mechanism.

Even though The First Descendant is free to play, you can feel like you’re getting a lot behind randoms or your squadmate without spending a penny.

You won’t have a decent build without spending hundreds of hours or having that 1% luck to get the descendant particles.

If you want to get LePic or, for instance, season 1’s latest character, Hailey, it won’t be easy.

As previously mentioned, you must have four different pieces to craft the descendant; you will mostly hunt for the last particle almost all of the time.

Overall, The First Descendant offers a visually stunning and action-packed experience, which is worth exploring for fans of cooperative RPG shooters.
